Bacillus is a large group of Gram-positive, rod-shaped bacteria that form endospores. It includes natto bacteria (B. subtilis var. natto), Bacillus subtilis, and even the pathogen B. anthracis (anthrax), encompassing diverse species.
The genus's greatest characteristic is endospore formation. When nutrients are depleted, cells create extremely durable endospores within. They can withstand desiccation, high temperatures, ultraviolet radiation, and chemicals.
In industry, proteases and amylases produced by Bacillus are used in detergents and food processing. A multifaceted group of bacteria possessing both useful and dangerous aspects.
