A self-regulatory mechanism where a metabolic pathway's final product inhibits the first enzyme in the pathway. Prevents excessive product accumulation.
Feedback inhibition is a mechanism where a metabolic pathway's end product allosterically inhibits the pathway's first enzyme. A signal of 'enough has been made' reaches the initial stage, stopping wasteful production.
Amino acid biosynthesis is the classic example. In threonine synthesis, accumulated threonine inhibits the first enzyme (threonine deaminase). Cells produce only what they need—a rational design.
In fermented food contexts, this principle explains why microorganisms produce only 'just the right amount' of certain metabolites. In industrial fermentation, mutant strains with released feedback inhibition are used to mass-produce amino acids and organic acids. A domain where scientific perspective and practical knowledge intersect.
