Geographical Indication (GI)
Geographical Indication
Japanese: GI(地理的表示保護制度)
A system legally protecting names of agricultural and food products whose quality and characteristics are linked to their place of origin. Many fermented foods are registered.
The GI system protects product names tied to regional terroir and traditional methods as intellectual property. While Champagne and Parmigiano-Reggiano are famous, Japan's system launched in 2015 drew attention through the Hatcho miso registration debate. GI aims to guarantee quality and protect regional brands, but it also poses the question of who constitutes a legitimate producer. Dialogue over defining tradition is an unavoidable theme in considering the future of fermented foods. The GI system is expanding globally, with over 3,000 products registered in the EU. Japanese fermented foods may enhance international competitiveness by leveraging GI designation.
