Photosynthetic bacteria

A general term for bacteria that use light energy to synthesize organic matter. Includes purple sulfur bacteria and purple non-sulfur bacteria, some with mechanisms different from plant photosynthesis.
Photosynthetic bacteria is a general term for bacteria that use light as an energy source. Unlike plant photosynthesis, many photosynthetic bacteria do not split water and do not generate oxygen.
Purple sulfur bacteria and green sulfur bacteria use hydrogen sulfide and other compounds as electron donors. Cyanobacteria are the exception, performing oxygenic photosynthesis like plants. It is believed that cyanobacteria were the first to introduce oxygen into Earth's atmosphere.
Though their direct connection to fermentation is limited, photosynthetic bacteria are attracting attention in organic agriculture and bioremediation (environmental cleanup). An important concept bridging theory and practice.
