Bioeconomy

Japanese: バイオエコノミー

An economic system leveraging biological resources and processes. Fermentation technology is one of the bioeconomy's core technologies.

The bioeconomy reduces dependence on fossil resources by basing economic activity on biological resources and processes. Fermentation sits at its core: microbial biofuel production, bioplastics manufacturing, pharmaceutical synthesis. Beyond the food industry, fermentation technology continues expanding into energy, materials, and medicine. Japan's accumulated traditional fermentation expertise gives it unique strengths in advancing the bioeconomy. At the intersection of tradition and innovation lies Japan's bioeconomic potential. Japan's koji mold was designated the national fungus in 2006, but its industrial applications in the bioeconomy remain underexplored. Research is advancing to apply koji's power beyond food—into pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and environmental remediation.
