Biodegradable plastics produced through microbial fermentation. Expected to reduce environmental impact as alternatives to petroleum-based plastics.
Bioplastics are made from biodegradable polymers like polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) produced through microbial fermentation of sugars and starches. Unlike petroleum-based plastics, they decompose naturally by microorganisms, offering a potential solution to ocean plastic pollution. Polylactic acid (PLA), made by polymerizing lactic acid from fermented corn starch, is already used in food packaging. The idea of creating materials through fermentation is a step toward a society free from petroleum dependence. Bioplastics' challenges lie in production cost and physical property gaps compared to petroleum plastics. Yet technological progress and economies of scale are closing these gaps. A future where fermentation-derived bioplastics are commonplace may not be far off.
