Resilience
Japanese: レジリエンス
The capacity of a system to recover and maintain function against external disturbances. Healthy fermentation systems and gut environments exhibit high resilience.
Resilience is the capacity of a disturbed system to recover, or to maintain function while adapting to change. A healthy nuka bed with diverse microorganisms maintains quality despite temperature fluctuations or delayed care. The gut flora similarly shows high resilience when diverse—withstanding dietary changes and stress. Monoculture is efficient but fragile; diversity is the source of resilience. This principle extends from the fermentation world to a universal wisdom applicable to society itself. The pandemic exposed global supply chain fragility. Meanwhile, communities self-sufficient in local fermented foods demonstrated high food security resilience. Diversity-based resilience is wisdom for navigating uncertain times.
