A system of many interacting elements whose collective behavior is difficult to predict. Fermentation processes are typical complex systems.

A complex system is one where many components interact nonlinearly, producing collective behavior unpredictable from individual parts. Fermentation is a prime example: hundreds of microbial species interact amid fluctuating parameters—temperature, pH, nutrients, water activity—changing over time. Minute differences in conditions can dramatically alter final flavor, the same principle making long-term weather forecasting difficult. Understanding fermentation as a complex system means releasing the illusion of complete control and accepting the depth of the microbial world. Complex systems research is an interdisciplinary framework shared by ecology, economics, and sociology beyond fermentation. Viewing fermentation as a complex system reveals meaning in the experience of it works, though we do not know why.
