Food Labeling Act

Japanese: 食品表示法(しょくひんひょうじほう)

Law establishing food labeling rules. Protecting consumer safety and right to choose.

The Food Labeling Act is a Japanese law establishing rules for food name, ingredients, allergens, nutrition facts, best-before dates, and storage methods. Enacted in 2015 by consolidating labeling provisions from the Food Sanitation Act, JAS Act, and Health Promotion Act.

Selling manufactured miso requires accurate labeling under this law. Ingredient listing order (by weight) and allergen declarations directly affect consumer safety. Selling homemade miso also requires notification to the local health center. Making and delivering are a continuum of responsibility.

Full enforcement of the Food Labeling Act in 2020 mandated nutritional labeling. For miso, salt equivalent display directly addresses consumer health awareness. Voluntary labels like 'non-GMO soybeans' also require legally compliant accurate descriptions.
