Metabolic flux analysis (MFA) quantifies the flow rates (fluxes) of substances through metabolic pathways—visualizing 'traffic volumes' across metabolic routes.
By feeding microorganisms substrates labeled with stable isotopes (¹³C, ¹⁵N) and tracking labeling patterns in metabolites via mass spectrometry, fluxes through each pathway can be estimated. This technology enables drawing the complete 'map' of microbial metabolism.
